The Psychology of Colour: How Colours Influence Us

How Colours Affect Emotions and Behavior

Colours profoundly affect our emotions, behavior, and decision-making. This premise is explored further in colour psychology, how specific hues manifest into certain feelings and reactions. Following are some general associations- again, not absolute:

Red:

It calls forth energy, passion, and urgency. Used in marketing to catch eyes (and even stimulate appetite), fast-food logos stand out with red.

Blue:

This relates to calmness, trust, and reliability. Also employed by financial institutions to portray a sense of stability.

Yellow:

stands for happiness, optimism, and warmth. In extreme cases, it can also lead to feelings of unrest.

Green:

This represents nature, health, and growth. Way brands try to paint themselves as eco-friendly.

Black:

Black means sophistication, strength, and class, a common colour for luxury branding.

White:

White stands for purity, simplicity, and cleanliness. It is wildly adopted into minimalist designs.

Applications of Colour Psychology

Marketing and Branding: Companies apply colours to affect consumer behavior and brand perception.

Interior Design: Colours are strategically selected to achieve desired moods in spaces, such as calming blues in bedrooms or energizing yellows for the kitchen.

Healthcare: Some colours stimulate while others promote relaxation.
