The Bloop Sound

Investigating one of the loudest and most mysterious underwater sounds ever recorded.

What is the Bloop?

According to NOAA in 1997, Bloop is an underwater sound that has been termed as mysterious. An ultra-low-frequency sound of humongous volume was detected by the hydrophones located 5000 kilometers apart in the Pacific Ocean. The sound lasted for about a minute and was so powerful that it could be detected across vast distances.

Initial Theories:

The strange nature with which Bloop was recorded brought about conflicting theories on origin:

Biological Origin:

The sound is argued to have been produced by an unknown marine animal, possibly huge; in the event, dreams of monsters or even cryptids came to mind.

Geological Activity:

It is said to be related to volcanic activity under the water to movement of the tectonic plates.

Scientific Explanation:

NOAA scientists concluded finally, after a number of years of inquiry, that the Bloop was most likely caused by the fracturing of large icebergs or ice shelves in Antarctica. Closely matching icequake recordings at Bloop well fit its sound profile and provide a natural explanation for the phenomenon.
